Oltenia - South Wine Region

Before phylloxera swept through Europe, Oltenia was responsible for nearly 40% of Romania's red wine production. At the time, local and indigenous grape varieties thrived in every subregion. Though many of these were lost, a few resilient stars remain — proof of Romania's creative winemaking legacy. Today, the region continues to evolve, balancing tradition with a new wave of quality-focused producers.

Oltenia spans southern Romania, bordered by the Danube, the Southern Carpathians, and the Olt River. Vineyards range from gently sloped hills to higher elevations like the DOP Mehedinti subregion. You'll find historic names such as Samburesti and the emblematic Dragasani, known for their finesse and native varietals. Further west lie Dealurile Craiovei, Severin, Plaiurile Drancei, and the prestigious Segarcea.

White wines from Oltenia shine through varieties like Cramposie Selectionata, a local treasure, as well as Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala, and Tamaioasa Romaneasca. International whites like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris also thrive. But it's the reds that turn heads — especially the bold and charismatic Negru de Dragasani. Other traditional varieties like Babeasca Neagra, Feteasca Neagra, and Novac stand alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Marselan, Merlot, and Syrah, creating a mix of bold tradition and modern flair.
