Lechinta Vineyard
The Lechinta vineyard, steeped in a rich and ancient history, was once celebrated as the "land of imperial wine" in ancient times. According to legend, a small goddess, observing the hills covered with nothing but grass and a few leaves, proclaimed, "There must be fruit here!" In response to her declaration, vine plantations thrived in the region, and the benevolent goddess ensured abundant harvests. This marked the inception of vineyards that adorned the hills of Lechinta during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, becoming the esteemed source of wine for the imperial court. The legacy of Lechinta as a prestigious wine-producing region continues to echo through time, with its ancient vines and storied past contributing to the unique character and distinction of the wines cultivated in this historic terroir.
View MapThe Lechinta vineyard is situated in the hilly region between the Somesului Mare and Muresului rivers in the northeastern part of the Transylvanian Plateau. It spans both sides of the 47th parallel north, ranging from 46º40' (Hodosa) to 47º14' (Dumitra). The terrain is exclusively hilly, encompassing subcarpathian hills in the eastern part (the Bistrita hills and the Mures hills) and high hills of the Eastern Transylvanian Plain in the western part. These hills generally have altitudes between 300-500 m, with moderately to strongly inclined slopes (5º-25º) and a high degree of dispersion of the vine plantations.
The Lechinta vineyard features a variety of soils that contribute to the unique characteristics of its wines. The region has a combination of clay, limestone, and loam soils. Each of these soil types has distinct properties that influence the growth of grapevines and, consequently, the flavor profile of the grapes. The vines are influenced by the mineral content, drainage characteristics, and nutrient availability of the soil, ultimately shaping the distinctive flavors and qualities of the wines produced in this region. Wines from the Lechinta vineyard carry the distinct characteristics of the terroir, marked by fruitiness, freshness, and a slightly higher acidity. They are refined wines with a wealth of typical and variety-specific aromas.
Cultivated on the hills of this vineyard are grape varieties such as Gewurtztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat Ottonel, Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, Feteasca Regala, Feteasca Alba, and Chardonnay. Each of these varieties contributes to the unique flavor profile that defines the wines from the Lechinta vineyard.
