Segarcea forms part of the historic wine landscape of Oltenia, but its identity is inseparable from Romania's royal heritage. Wines from Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea were served at royal and diplomatic occasions, establishing a reputation that extended well beyond the vineyard itself. After decades of decline during the communist period, the estate entered a new chapter in 2002, when its vineyards and winemaking traditions began a comprehensive revival.
Today, Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea covers approximately 300 hectares, with around 60% of the vineyard dedicated to red varieties and 40% to white grapes. The warm conditions of Segarcea are particularly well suited to structured reds, while careful vineyard management allows white varieties to retain freshness and aromatic definition. This balance has helped restore Segarcea's position among the distinctive wine-growing areas of southern Romania.
One of the vineyard's rarest treasures is Tamaioasa Roz, also known as Pink Tamaioasa, a distinctive aromatic grape related to Muscat Rouge de Frontignan. Preserved at Segarcea and cultivated on approximately 14 hectares, the variety represents an unusual part of the vineyard's ampelographic heritage and gives Segarcea an identity found almost nowhere else in Romanian wine.
The vineyard brings together an extensive collection of Romanian and international grape varieties. Native grapes such as Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Neagra and Tamaioasa Romaneasca grow alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Marselan, Syrah, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier. This diversity allows Segarcea to combine its historic red-wine reputation with a broad contemporary portfolio.
