You’ve just brought home a bottle of wine — maybe a bold Feteasca Neagra, a crisp Riesling, or an elegant Pinot Noir. The label looks promising, the corkscrew is ready. But a quiet question lingers: *Is this wine ready to drink?*

Contrary to popular belief, not all wines benefit from aging. In fact, **most wines are crafted to be enjoyed young**, when their fruit is fresh and their texture vibrant. So how do you know if you should pop the cork now — or wait?

1. Drink Window vs. Cellar Time
A wine's "drink window" refers to the period when it shows its best. Some whites — like Feteasca Alba or Sauvignon Blanc — are best in the first 1–3 years. Others, like barrel-aged Chardonnay or structured reds, might need 3–5 years (or more) to evolve fully.

2. The Producer Knows Best
Romanian winemakers often indicate the optimal drinking period on the back label or website. If it’s not specified, trust your local wine merchant — or our guides! Wineries like Davino, SERVE, or Lacerta often design wines with both freshness and aging potential in mind.

3. Vintage Counts
A wine from 2022 might be ready now, but one from 2019 could just be peaking. Warmer vintages may mature faster; cooler years may need patience. Check vintage charts or tasting notes from producers to get a sense of where a wine stands.

4. Signs It’s Time
If the wine has integrated aromas (fruit, spice, earth), a softened structure, and a balanced finish, it’s likely in its sweet spot. If it still tastes sharp, tannic or closed, let it rest a little longer — ideally in a cool, dark place.

5. Trust Your Curiosity
Sometimes, the only way to know is to taste. Open a bottle, pour a glass, and listen to what the wine has to say. That moment — discovery, surprise, delight — is what wine is all about.

Final Sip
Wine doesn’t come with a stopwatch. It's a living thing — and part of the pleasure is finding the moment when it speaks to you. Whether it's youthful and bright or mature and layered, a Romanian wine has something to tell you. You just have to open it in time.
