Crisana-Maramures - West Wine Region
The Crisana and Maramures wine region, situated in northwest Romania, unfolds across the counties of Satu Mare, Salaj, Bihor, and Arad (north of Mures). Its rich viticultural heritage is steeped in history, with the earliest documented evidence of the Arad vineyard tracing back to the first half of the 11th century. This region is a tapestry of diverse landscapes, where vineyards thrive amidst the picturesque surroundings, contributing to the unique character of the wines produced here. As we delve into the vinous narrative of Crisana and Maramures, we discover a fascinating blend of tradition and innovation that defines this dynamic wine-producing region.
Throughout its historical trajectory, the development of viticulture in the Crisana and Maramures vineyards has been a gradual process, reaching its zenith in the 15th and 16th centuries. During this period, wine transitioned from a mere beverage to a necessity, constituting a staggering 80% of the income for both local lords and citizens. The vineyard's expanse was subject to fluctuations based on the ruling powers of the time, ranging from 700 hectares in the 1562 vintage to a more expansive 2,100-2,800 hectares in the 1746 vintage, influenced by the alternating Ottoman and Austrian dominion.
This region is characterized by higher temperatures during the summer months of June, July, and August, accompanied by an extended growing season. Viticulture thrives in the hilly terrain between the Mures and Tisza rivers, as well as in the flat expanses of the Tisza plain, Oradea, and Halmeu regions. The average altitude of the vineyards stands at 222 meters.
In the Crisana Maramures wine region, traditional Romanian grape varieties such as Feteasca Neagra for red wines and Feteasca Regala for white wines are cultivated. Additionally, the vineyards host varieties that thrive in these exceptional conditions, including Cadarca, Furmint, and Blaufrankish. The Crisana-Maramures region also boasts valuable international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Welschriesling, and Muscat Ottonel. The pedoclimatic conditions unique to this region contribute to the high acidity of white wines and impart smoothness and finesse to the red wines produced here.
