Odobesti is one of the historic vineyards of Vrancea, located along the eastern foothills of the Subcarpathians between the Putna River to the north and the Milcov Valley to the south. For generations, vines have shaped these rolling landscapes and established Odobesti as an important centre of Romanian viticulture.

The vineyard also played an important role in the renewal of Romanian winegrowing following the phylloxera crisis. The establishment of the Odobesti Experimental Viticulture Station strengthened its position as a centre for research, vine selection and technical knowledge, contributing to the reconstruction and modernisation of vineyards in one of Romania's major wine-producing territories.

Odobesti forms part of the historic Vrancea wine landscape, together with the neighbouring vineyards of Panciu and Cotesti. Together, these vineyards developed into one of the most important concentrations of vines in the Moldavia wine region, giving Vrancea a central place in the history of Romanian wine production.

The viticultural importance of this territory has deep historical roots. Wine from the Moldavian vineyards circulated beyond the region for centuries, reaching important markets and royal courts in Central and Eastern Europe. This long commercial tradition helped establish Vrancea as a major wine-producing territory and created a heritage that remains visible in the extensive vineyards surrounding Odobesti today.

At the heart of Odobesti's identity stands Galbena de Odobesti, one of Romania's distinctive native white grape varieties and a grape whose name is inseparable from the vineyard itself. It represents the local continuity of Odobesti and gives the vineyard a viticultural signature that distinguishes it within the broader Moldavian wine landscape.

Alongside Galbena de Odobesti, traditional Romanian white varieties include Feteasca Alba, Plavaie, Cramposie Selectionata and Babeasca Gri. International white varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Rhine Riesling broaden the stylistic range of the vineyard.

Red varieties add another dimension to Odobesti. Traditional grapes such as Babeasca Neagra and Feteasca Neagra grow alongside international varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. This combination of native and international grapes allows Odobesti to maintain its historical identity while supporting an increasingly diverse contemporary wine portfolio.

In recent years, renewed investment and the development of new wineries have added another dimension to the vineyard. Romanian sparkling wines are increasingly part of the area's modern wine identity, complementing Odobesti's long-established still-wine tradition and demonstrating how one of Romania's historic vineyards continues to evolve.
