Grasa de Cotnari

Authentic Romanian White Grape Variety
Romanian Wines - Grasa de Cotnari
Grasa de Cotnari is traditionally cultivated in the historic vineyards of Cotnari. According to most authors, Grasa originated in the heart of historical Dacia, within the present-day territory of the Alba vineyard—a vineyard deemed "too old for history to reveal its beginnings." Some experts propose that the Grasa variety shares a common origin with the Furmint variety, both belonging to the same sortogroup. Originating in Alba Iulia, the Grasa variety later found its way to Cotnari, while the Furmint variety took root in the Tokay vineyard in Hungary.

Grasa de Cotnari in Romania

Grasa de Cotnari is cultivated on 546 hectares, with the largest area found in the Cotnari vineyard. Additionally, the Grasa de Cotnari variety demonstrates successful cultivation on a significant surface in the Pietroasa wine-growing center within the Dealu Mare vineyard. In general, the sweet wines produced from Grasa, obtained from grapes picked after ripening (raisining of the berries), exhibit organoleptic and compositional properties that position them among the globally renowned wines of this type. These wines are characterized by significant glycerol and extract contents, imparting unctuousness and body. Typically, the wines obtained have an alcoholic strength of at least 12°, a relatively high total acidity around 5.0 g/l, and a sugar content exceeding 50 g/l. When young, these natural sweet wines exhibit a greenish-yellow or yellow hue with greenish reflections. They are distinguished by a unique aroma, partly due to substances produced by noble rot, evoking scents of dried apricots, beeswax, or raisins.
