Francusa
In Romania, more than 277 hectares are cultivated with Francusa. As a grape variety, it is traditionally associated with the eastern parts of Romania, with its most notable cultivation in the Cotnari wine region. The Cotnari area, located in the northeastern part of the country, is one of Romania's oldest and most famous wine-producing regions. This region's climate and soil are particularly suited for white grape varieties, making it an ideal place for cultivating Francusa grapes.
Apart from Cotnari, Francusa can also be found in other wine regions of Romania, but to a lesser extent. The focus on traditional, local grape varieties, such as Francusa, is part of a broader trend in Romanian viticulture, aiming to preserve and celebrate indigenous grapes that offer a distinct sense of place and tradition.
The cultivation of Francusa, along with other native grape varieties, showcases the diversity of Romanian wines and the country's rich viticultural heritage. These efforts not only help maintain biodiversity in Romanian vineyards but also offer wine enthusiasts unique and authentic experiences that reflect the character and history of the regions where these grapes are grown.
