Babeasca Neagra

Babeasca Neagra is among the most cultivated varieties for red wines in Romania, covering a total area of over 6000 hectares. Though deeply rooted in the Romanian viticultural heritage, Babeasca Neagra has crossed borders, being cultivated in the Republic of Moldova under the name Rara Neagra - where it is considered a national variety - in Ukraine and Dagestan, known as Chernyi Redkii and Asil Kara, respectively, and for some years now in the United States, where it is bottled under the name Sereksiya.

Due to its historical depth in the region's viticulture, Babeasca Neagra has developed several clonal variations and mutations, thus giving rise to varieties such as Babeasca Alba (White Babeasca) or Babeasca Gri (Gris Babeasca). In Romania, this variety is especially grown in the Moldova wine region, in the Nicoresti vineyards, but also in Odobesti, Cotesti, and Panciu.

The wines produced from Babeasca Neagra are noted for their complex aromatic profile, which can include notes of black fruits, cherries, plums, and spices, with possible floral or earthy tones, varying significantly depending on the terroir and winemaking practices. This variety yields wines with a medium to full body and moderate to strong tannins, giving them significant aging potential.
